Berlin and Istanbul celebrate 25th anniversary of the sister city agreement
2014 was the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall and the sister city arrangement with Istanbul at the same time. Berlin and Istanbul are bound by one particular thing: creativity! Both cities have a strong appeal to artists and creative people. While Istanbul is becoming a center of the international art scene, Berlin represents an exciting mixture of art, film, music, design and fashion.
Since 1989, there has been an intense and versatile connection between both metropolises. The two cities celebrate the 25th anniversary together in Istanbul from November 13-16, 2014 under the motto “BERLIN MEETS ISTANBUL”. A German delegation consisting of actors from politics, business and science will travel to Istanbul. “Berlin and Istanbul maintain a very close and amicable relation to each other. In the past 25 years, both cities have developed into innovative and dynamic metropolises, characterized by constant change”, says Dr. Richard Meng, spokesman of the Senate.
The capital city marketing campaign be Berlin invited actors from the culture and creative scenes of both cities to exchange ideas within the scope of this event. There was an opportunity for that at the panel with the subject “Cosmopolitan Identities” where the protagonists of the German-Turkish art and science scenes from Berlin and Istanbul came together. The underground festival BERLISTANBUL#25 was intended to visualize the underground scenes of both cities by Berlin’s collective SubOrientProductions with DJs, live bands, films as well as dance and audiovisual performances. “Creativity has the power to connect people, cities and cultures in a very special way. Berlin and Istanbul are two cities with high economic potential acting as magnets for young people with innovative ideas. We want to create new synergies with our activities”, says Christine Carboni, Head of Division Capital City Marketing at Berlin Partner for Business and Technology.
