Siemens AG
What began in 1847 as a small workshop by the name of “Telegraphen Bau-Anstalt von Siemens & Halske” in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg is today the internationally active company Siemens AG. Out of that original ten-man operation emerged a corporation with roughly 400,000 employees in 190 countries. Berlin continues to act as the headquarters of the company, which today is one of the leading global providers in the field of electronics, electrical engineering, heavy industry, energy and healthcare. Berlin is Siemens’ largest manufacturing site in the world. In 2009, the company produced goods and services valued at roughly €2.6 million. Siemens manufactures a wide spectrum of electronic and electro-technical products in Berlin. For example, train signaling equipment is made in the district of Treptow and gas turbines for power plants in the district of Moabit. The company’s center is still found, however, at the so-called “Siemensstadt” (“Siemens City”) where switchgears for energy distribution, motors for ship engines and wind generators, and measurement technology is crafted and delivered to the entire world. R&D also play a key role at Siemens, with roughly 1,400 researchers currently working in Berlin on new and improved products and solutions.
