Daimler AG

Daimler AG’s “e-mobility Berlin” project is making electromobility part of daily life in the capital. A total of 100 Smart Electric Drive-type cars are already driving through the city. Starting in 2012, the Berlin factory will produce electric motors for Mercedes-Benz hybrid drive systems. The industries operating in the capital and its surrounding region are – and will continue to be – a major engine of change. Berlin – the place to be for future industries.

A century of history links Daimler AG with Berlin. The Mercedes Benz factory in Berlin opened in 1902, making it the company’s oldest factory still in production. Electric motors for Mercedes-Benz hybrid vehicles will be produced here from 2012, vehicles that will set the course for the future of mobility. The Mercedes-World at Salzufer on the Spree River is a showcase for the Berlin office, which has been offering its services to customers in the city since 1909. Berlin is also home to the headquarters of Mercedes Benz Germany’s sales and distribution organization and Daimler Financial Services AG. The company’s Society and Technology Research Center and Corporate Representational Office for Federal Affairs are likewise located in the capital. At the end of 2009, the company employed around 6,000 people in Berlin.

Alexander Menzel, Development Team Member, Daimler AG

be future-oriented, be passionate, be berlin

"Engineering is my passion. The foundation for this enthusiasm was laid by my father, who was an engineer with all of his heart and soul. As a child, we would often tinker together on technical apparatuses. In 2002, after training to be an auto mechanic and later becoming a master mechanic, I started working for Mercedes-Benz in Berlin. In addition to engines, we also manufacture modern components and parts that are produced using environmentally friendly technologies. The special thing about the Mercedes-Benz facility in Berlin is its in-house development department. We don’t just produce engine components here; we also develop and test them too. If you’re in development, you have to be creative, innovative and future-oriented – that’s what makes the job so exciting. Here, you’re always working on the absolute latest in technology, and what we produce has a direct effect on the environment. But what makes our facility so special is the flexibility with which we react to new challenges. Theory and practice are very closely linked here. This fact is reflected in the quality of our products and the motivation of our employees. And these are ideal conditions for carrying out our latest project – the production of an electric motor for hybrid engines – starting in 2012."

Thomas Uhr, Manager Mercedes-Benz Werk Berlin

"Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile, and the oldest Daimler factory is found in Berlin. We have been designing the future here for over 100 years. In drawing on this tradition and a young and highly motivated team, we see ourselves as being ideally equipped to set important trends in the future, for example with the production of a new transmission-integrated electric engine at our location here in Berlin.”
