BMW has manufactured motorcycles in Germany’s only motorcycle factory in Spandau for the past 40 years. Roughly 2,000 skilled staff from Berlin work with the help of precise automation technology and handcraftsmanship to ensure that up to 520 bikes a day roll off the production line – that makes more than 100,000 each year. All the BMW motorbikes travelling the world’s roads carry modern technology and expertise from Berlin wherever they go – and their tires are filled with that legendary “Berlin air”. Berlin – the place to be for future industries.

BMW AG Werk Berlin

The BMW Werk Berlin has been a member of the BMW factory alliance for over 70 years and contributed to BMW’s success from the very beginning. It all began in Berlin with the production of airplane engines, which was soon followed by automobile and motorcycle components. The factory in Berlin has been the only production site for BMW motorcycles since 1969, while their engines and components are made worldwide. More than 1,900,000 BMW motorcycles have rolled off the line since then – an annual rate of 100,000 bikes – and also over six million automobile brake pads.

BMW Motorrad provides the market with large-volume premium motorcycles in the segments known as Enduro, Urban, Sport, Touring and High Perfomance. Customers can choose from 44 motorcycle models with up to 22 different colors and over 200 optional equipment features. Customer preferences are the focus at BMW, and this allows the company to succeed in a highly volatile and seasonal market by means of volume flexibility and the quick and adaptable adjustment of its working-time models. BMW’s customer-oriented sales and production process also makes it possible to change order specifications up until right before production – a unique feature in the world of motorcycles. A workforce of roughly 2,000 is currently employed in Berlin, each of whom influences BWM’s brand image, its products and production: innovative spirit and uncompromising quality standards combine with a fascination and passion for maximum sporting performance.

Jörg Börner, Motorcycle Master Assembler, BMW Motorrad

sei begeistert, sei motiviert, sei berlin

"I‘m 36 years old and build BMW motorcycles. When the Wall came down and the world was changing, I was 16 and lived in East Berlin. I had already discovered my love for motorcycles by the time I was training as a car mechanic, and this passion has never let me go. When BMW expanded 10 years ago, I applied on the spot and got lucky. In 2001, I began assembling motorcycles and was able to make my hobby into my job. Very soon I got the opportunity for promotion and more responsibility. I‘ve worked as a master assembler since 2008, although I‘ll only have my master craftsman‘s certificate next fall after finishing night school – what a great show of confidence! BMW is an extraordinary employer: not only are the pay and social security benefits good, but everyone here has the possibility for both professional and personal advancement. Berlin is my home city and I‘ve spent my entire life here. The multicultural metropolis has so much to offer! The fact that BMW is here is not only great for me – the whole city benefits from it!"

Hermann Bohrer, BMW Plant Manager Berlin:

“Companies need functioning structures, resilient networks and synergy-forming collaborative projects. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that a company like ours would want to be involved in Berlin’s creative city marketing campaign from the very beginning. This is one of the best ways to increase the capital region’s competitiveness in a sustainable manner.  The campaign allows the BMW plant in Berlin to strengthen its outward appearance as a Berlin-based production company, as a regional employer and as a business partner for clients and suppliers.”
