Culture in Berlin
Berlin’s many recreational opportunities also contribute to the city’s high quality of life. The hip capital continues to attract an increasing number of visitors to its shores with a diverse array of concerts, exhibitions and cultural events. There are an infinite number of things to discover, experience and admire here every day. And nowhere else can you combine work, free time and culture as well as in Berlin.
Berlin’s cultural offerings have something for everyone. The city boasts 180 museums and memorials, including the world-famous Pergamon Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie, 150 stages and theaters, 284 cinemas and 430 galleries. Berlin also has a young and creative alternative scene. And it’s precisely this mixture of established cultural institutions and experimental alternative scenes that accounts for the special charm of Berlin’s cultural landscape.
Berlin has three large opera houses of international renown: the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Deutsche Oper and Komische Oper. At the moment, the city also has three independent opera ensembles, seven symphony orchestras and roughly 15 chamber orchestras as well as roughly 850 choirs.
A number of major cultural events have also established themselves in Berlin – and many more are added each year. Particular highlights include, for example, the Long Night of the Museums, the events associated with the Berliner Festspiele, the summer open-air events at Gendarmenmarkt Square and, of course, the Berlin International Film Festival. Since its inception in 1951, the “Berlinale” has formed one of the city’s major annual cultural events.
