Solar Roof for Astronautics Museum in Moscow

Moscow’s striking Memorial Museum for Astronautics recently gained another eye-catching attraction – a rooftop solar energy system that was officially inaugurated on November 2, 2010. The project was initiated by the German Energy Agency (dena) and receives support from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) as part of the “Renewable Energies Export Initiative.” The solar roof facility has an output of roughly 5.5 kWp and will supply the museum with sun-powered electricity for the next ten years.

Message from the Governing Mayor of Berlin

Berlin and Moscow are bound by a close friendship. Indeed, the two metropolises have much in common – not simply because they are capitals and home to federal governments and parliaments. Both cities are also international capitals of culture. The close partnership between the two cities is cemented by a number of cooperative activities and an intense cultural exchange – a bond that was sealed with a joint declaration twenty years ago. Both cities have also undergone a process of rapid development in the past two decades – one that reflects first and foremost the courage and strength to pave new paths. The solar system on the roof of the Memorial Museum for Astronautics was developed in joint German-Russian cooperation and is an excellent example of the extent to which fruitful connections between Berlin and Moscow have also emerged in the field of business. The project receives support from renowned Berlin-based institutions and companies, as well as from the be Berlin capital city marketing campaign. The sustainable use of renewable energies is indeed a global topic. The fact that Berlin-based companies are successful on a global scale in other fields is underscored by the “ich bin ein berliner” campaign. This industrial campaign was launched at the beginning of September by the Berlin Senate and the Berlin business community together with Berlin-based companies under the umbrella of the be Berlin campaign and designed to showcase the tremendous potential of the city as an industrial metropolis. Some of the companies involved in the industrial campaign are also involved in developing the photovoltaic project on the roof of the Memorial Museum. Their work makes them ambassadors for industry in Berlin and pioneers in the field of transnational research and development.
