e-werk and Café Moskau – Major Players in Berlin’s Club Culture
In any conversation about club culture in Berlin, two legendary locations will get mentioned immediately: e-werk and Café Moskau. These two clubs launched movements that have already gone down in club and music history. e-werk was the birthplace of the techno movement in the 1990s and, at the same time, the incubator of a form of electronic music that would go on to inspire a new generation of fans. Café Moskau was one of Berlin’s most important clubs and had a tremendous influence on the city’s club-culture image. Its riotous parties made it legendary well beyond the city limits.
Both locations became symbols of a lifestyle that could only be lived in Berlin – free, non-conformist and subversive. This way of life found expression in music. It gave voice to the sheer strength, creativity and boundlessness of a city that had been separated and isolated for decades – and, indeed, one that had developed two distinct yet parallel structures and societies on both sides of the Wall. The result was that a sense of unlimited creativity blanketed the city and inspired its inhabitants.
